Budding Social Entrepreneurs - Take the next step to £10,000

Budding local social entrepreneurs are being reminded to enter a competition with a £10,000 prize pot for the winner. There is still one month left to take part in the easy-to-enter Richmond’s Den.
Building on last year’s successful programme, Richmond’s Den 2013 will provide entrants with direct support, training and advice - and potentially a cash injection to kick-start the business. ‘The Den’ is a joint venture from Richmond Council, Richmond Social Enterprise Partnership and commercial sponsors,
Initial entry takes only 500 words to outline your business opportunity. Judging criteria include business viability, sustainability and social purpose. Entrants that are shortlisted will be supported to develop their ideas further and will have the opportunity to present their ideas to a supportive expert panel. All entrants will be offered advice and support through workshops later this year.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Business and Culture, said:
“This is an exciting competition and a truly golden opportunity for our entrepreneurial residents to make their mark on the local economy. If entrants get no further than taking the ideas they have and turning them into 500 words, then they are still taking that critical first step towards enterprise.
“We have received a number of innovative proposals already but hope many more people enter to really give us something to think about. The winners will receive a fantastic package of assistance to help them get started and fulfil their potential.”
Confirmed sponsors so far are St Mary’s University, BAA Heathrow, Rugby Football Union, The Best of Richmond, Veolia Environmental Services, Richmond Housing Partnership. Delivery partners include Richmond Council of Voluntary Services, Richmond Adult Community College, Richmond Chamber of Commerce, Social Enterprise Richmond and ROCBaSE – a new business support organisation in the borough.
Deadline for entries is 9a.m. on 7th May 2012. For more information go to: or follow us at
Potential entrants can also come to discuss their entry at the upcoming Richmond Business Expo on 26 April at Twickenham Stadium. Find out more at stand 27 - Richmond Council.
To enter contestants need to outline their idea in just 500 words and the successful entries will be invited to pitch their proposal to a panel of top business and industry judges.
